Google Search Console Just Changed How We Measure Social Media

Here Is What You Need to Know
Something rather significant landed on 7th July 2026 and we think every maritime marketer and business owner with a social media presence needs to understand it. (Because we had to too)
Google has introduced Platform Properties in Google Search Console, and it is one of the most meaningful updates to the search and social media landscape we have seen in a while.
But before we start, we want to clear up a common confusion we are already seeing circulating online. Because this update is not what some people think it is.
First: The Distinction That Matters
There are two different ways social media and Google interact. They have always been separate. This update changes one of them significantly.
What already existed: social media sending traffic to your website
If you have Google Analytics 4 set up on your website, you can already see social media as a traffic source. When someone clicks a link on Instagram, LinkedIn or YouTube that takes them to your website, GA4 records that as social referral traffic. This tells you which social platforms are sending visitors to your website and what those visitors do when they arrive.
This is website referral tracking. It has been available for years and it has not changed.
What is new: your social content appearing inside Google Search
Platform Properties is something completely different. It shows you how your social media posts and profiles perform within Google Search itself.
When someone searches on Google and your TikTok video, Instagram Reel, YouTube video or X post appears in the results, you can now see the clicks, impressions and search terms that generated that visibility. For the first time, your social content on platforms you do not own is visible inside a tool you do.
To put it plainly:
GA4 shows you social media traffic arriving at your website.
Search Console Platform Properties shows you your social content being discovered through Google.
Two different data streams. Both valuable. Neither replaces the other.
What Google Search Console Platform Properties Actually Does
Platform Properties is a new Search Console property type that helps site owners and creators understand how their social and video posts perform on Google Search and Discover. You can now track which search terms lead people to your Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube content on Search, and see exactly how your audience is interacting with your posts. MediaPost Publications
This is significant because until this update, social content living on platforms you do not own was a measurement blind spot. Your TikTok video could be appearing in thousands of Google search results every month and you would have had no way of knowing. That blind spot has now closed.
The Three Reports Available
Once you connect your social accounts as Platform Properties, you get access to three reports:
Performance Report
Total clicks, impressions and related metrics for your social content, filterable and sortable down to a specific post or search query. You can filter and sort this data to see which individual posts and search queries are driving the most traffic and export it for analysis in other tools. Search Engine Roundtable
Insights Report
A high-level view of recent traffic trends, your top-performing posts and how people are discovering your account through Google. This is the overview layer before you drill into the detail of the Performance Report.
Achievements
Milestone tracking based on your total clicks from Google Search in the last 28 days. A small but motivating addition that tracks growth over time.
Which Platforms Are Supported
Four platforms are supported at launch: Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube. Product Hunt
Notably absent from that list: LinkedIn.
For maritime businesses where LinkedIn is the primary platform, this is worth acknowledging. LinkedIn content does not yet feature as a Platform Property in Search Console. We would not be surprised to see it added in future given LinkedIn's growing presence in Google Search results, but for now it is the four platforms above.
How to Set It Up
The setup process is straightforward:
Go to Google Search Console and open the property selector dropdown in the left sidebar.
Click Add Property. Select the social platform you want to connect from the list of compatible options. Follow the on-screen verification steps to authorise the connection.
Once verified, a confirmation message appears. Click Go to Property to complete the setup.
Repeat for each platform you want to track.
Be patient. It will take a few days for the data to appear in the reports. The default date range for both the Insights and Performance reports is set to 28 days. Sinton
One important note: Google is rolling this out gradually over the coming weeks, so if you cannot see it yet, nothing is wrong on your end. Product Hunt
Why This Matters for Maritime Businesses
Maritime businesses are increasingly creating video content, particularly around major industry events like Posidonia, Seaworks and SMM. That content goes onto YouTube, increasingly onto Instagram and in some cases onto TikTok.
Until now, understanding whether that content was generating any search visibility on Google was impossible to measure directly. You could see views and engagement within the platforms themselves. You could not see whether your YouTube recap of a Posidonia panel discussion was appearing when someone searched for that topic on Google weeks later.
Platform Properties changes that. It connects the dots between your social content investment and its search performance in a way that simply was not available before.
For marketing teams making the case for video content budgets, this data is going to be useful. For business owners trying to understand where their content efforts are actually delivering return, it is a welcome development.
The Bigger Picture: Search and Social Are Converging
This update is part of a broader and accelerating trend. Social and video content increasingly earns visibility in Google Search and Discover. The search terms that drive traffic to websites are now visible for Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. The creators who treat their social content as searchable assets will have an advantage. This connects directly to AEO and GEO, the disciplines of optimising content to be cited and surfaced by AI-powered search tools and answer engines. As Google and other search tools pull from more sources, your social content is increasingly part of the picture.
The businesses that start thinking about their social content as searchable assets, not just platform-native content, are the ones that will build the broadest digital footprint going forward.
